A solid workbench is the most useful thing you'll ever build. It gives you a flat, sturdy surface to measure, cut, clamp and assemble, and it makes every future project easier. The good news: you can build a strong one from 2x4s and a sheet of plywood in a weekend.

Step 1: Choose your size

Step 2: Typical materials

For a 24 x 48 inch bench you'll usually need around eight 8-foot 2x4s, one sheet of 3/4" plywood (top and shelf), 2-1/2" and 1-1/4" construction screws, and wood glue. Pick the straightest boards you can find; sight down each one before you buy.

Step 3: The build order

  1. Build two rectangular frames from 2x4s: one for the top, one for the lower shelf, sized slightly smaller than your plywood.
  2. Cut four legs to your chosen height minus the thickness of the top.
  3. Attach the top frame to the legs with glue and screws, checking each corner with a square.
  4. Attach the shelf frame about 6–10 inches off the floor.
  5. Check for square by measuring the diagonals of the top frame; adjust until they match.
  6. Add the plywood top and shelf, screwing into the frames every 8–12 inches.
  7. Ease the edges with sandpaper and add a coat of finish to resist glue and spills.

Safety first: wear eye and hearing protection, keep blades sharp and guards in place, and follow your tool manufacturer's instructions. Measurements here are a starting point; always measure your own materials and check your cuts before assembly.
