There are thousands of free woodworking plans online, and some are excellent. Many others are missing measurements, skip steps, or were never actually built. Here's where to look and how to tell the difference.

5 signs a plan will cause problems

  1. No cut list. You'll be working out dimensions yourself.
  2. Only a rendering, no real photos. It may never have been built.
  3. Vague steps like "attach the sides" with no drawing or fastener info.
  4. Inconsistent measurements between the drawing and the text.
  5. Tools you don't own listed as essential halfway through.

Free vs. paid plans

Free plans are perfect for simple projects. For bigger builds like furniture, sheds or anything with complex joinery, a detailed, tested plan can save more in lumber and frustration than it costs. Whichever you choose, read the whole plan before you start and dry-fit before you glue.

Safety first: wear eye and hearing protection, keep blades sharp and guards in place, and follow your tool manufacturer's instructions. Measurements here are a starting point; always measure your own materials and check your cuts before assembly.
